On Wednesday night’s episode of his CNN show, Don Lemon admitted that Vice President Kamala Harris should have been ready to answer a question about visiting the border in her now-infamous interview with Lester Holt. However, Lemon was quick to defend Harris from there, saying that being called defensive is “often something that happens to women, especially women who are in power.”
Lemon began by saying that officials in the White House don’t see Harris’ trip to Central America as a success, adding that the question was a “lay-up” that she should have been ready for.
“[B]lack women are often held to a different standard and are scrutinized at a level, called defensive, called flippant, called all these things because we get one thing wrong,” said CNN Political Commentator Ashley Allison. “That is what I’m saying. And I think that her answer was not perfect but I don’t think it should be in the news cycle for an entire week.”
“I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, and I accept that. But also remember…what happened with Hillary Clinton, who is a white woman, they talked about her voice and that she was defensive and she was robotic and whatever,” Lemon replied. “It’s often something — I don’t want to mansplain, but you guys can correct me if I’m wrong, it’s often something that happens to women, especially women who are in power. Am I wrong?”
This came hours after Harris was called out for not visiting the border by NBC anchor Lester Holt. Harris has yet to visit the border even one time since becoming Vice President despite the fact that President Joe Biden put her in charge of handling the crisis there.
“Do you have plans to visit the border?” Holt asked, to which Harris responded, “We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border.”
“You haven’t been to the border,” Holt corrected her.
“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris said with a laugh. “I don’t understand the point you’re making.”
Cringe. Kamala Harris doesn't get it.
Holt: "Do you have any plans to visit the border?"
Harris: "We've been to the border. We've been the border."
Holt: "YOU haven't been to the border."
Harris: "…..and I haven't been to Europe. I don't understand the point you're making." pic.twitter.com/fFXMf8X0b6
